What is it for?
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin with essential characteristics, i.e., it must be incorporated into the diet to maintain and guarantee human health. Vitamin B12 intake in diets high in animal products is usually covered, however, in the case of plant based diets such as strict vegetarianism, it must be safely supplemented. In addition, in non-vegetarian patterns such as ovolactovegetarians or in diets where the consumption of foods of animal origin is occasional, supplementation may be indicated.
With regard to vitamin B12, this should not be neglected, since it has very important functions in metabolism, the nervous system, the functioning of the cardiac-endothelial system and a long etc., so keeping it at optimal levels should be a priority to ensure overall health, being a mandatory supplement in any plant-based diet.
As for its origin, the vitamin B12 has a bacterial origin, which means that it is not extracted from animal materials, something that together with the use of a vegan formula allows this product to be suitable for the consumption of this population.
In the case of vitamin B12 when determining and selecting a supplement under criteria of the highest quality it is important to place that its origin must be the aforementioned, since vegetable sources such as certain algae not only present an acute logos of the same or “false vitamin B12”, but that for that reason they can suppose a confusion in the analyses taking us to a situation of possible risk for our health.
In the case of the supplemented form it is also important to choose a presentation of cyanocobalamin, since it has no documented toxic dose, it is very stable to physical factors that can alter a product such as light or heat and it is also the most studied and used by the scientific literature.
Therefore, with few exceptions, a cyanocobalamin supplementation in two intakes of 1000 mcg (1 capsule) twice a week is optimal in order to maintain the same in a correct range and ensure that we should not worry about its range in analytical if a continuous supplementation is performed over time. Regarding this point, its administration in two separate doses (2 separate days of the week) is more efficient than its consumption in a single intake, something to keep in mind when using this supplement and that we recommend when making use of it.
