Why include nut and date bars during a race?

In running, as in other sports where carbohydrate intake during practice can be optimal, including date and nut energy bars can be a recommended option. This type of energy bar is generally packed with nutrients that help maintain and improve our performance. In this post, we tell you about their benefits, as well as the general properties of each of their components.

Natural and sustained source of energy:

Dates are a sweet fruit that comes from date palms. They are mainly grown in warm climates, originating in countries in the Middle East and North Africa. This fruit is an excellent source of quick energy. Dates are primarily rich in fructose and glucose. Carbohydrate intake during exertion helps maintain stable blood glucose levels and the carbohydrate oxidation rate, as well as reduce the depletion of muscle glycogen, which could delay the onset of fatigue and improve performance during exercise.

On the other hand, nuts such as almonds and hazelnuts provide healthy fats. These fats, mainly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, are essential for cardiovascular health and help keep you feeling full.

The combination of both, thanks to the healthy fats, allows you to maintain stable energy levels over time. In addition, thanks to the nutritional properties of both, we obtain a very balanced combination of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, as well as vitamins and minerals.

Source of vitamins and minerals:

Date and nut bars are rich in vitamins and minerals. Dates provide potassium, magnesium and vitamin B6. Nuts, although this may vary from one type to another, provide vitamin E and antioxidants, and are also an excellent source of fiber. Fiber not only improves digestion, but also helps stabilize blood glucose levels.

How much carbohydrate/how many bars should be included?

It is essential to adapt the dose to the athlete’s energy and nutritional needs at each point of the season.

Consuming 30–90 g of CHO during exercise has been shown to improve performance, especially in medium- and long-duration sports. Thus, if approximately 30 g of CHO/h are needed, one bar/h can be consumed during exercise.
