What is trail running?
Trail running is a type of running characterized by being very demanding, as it is practiced in the heart of nature, on trails and irregular terrain such as mountains, plains, hills, forests, etc. The terrain in trail running can vary, involving steep climbs, sharp descents, slippery surfaces, and natural obstacles that require constant attention.
What are the differences between trail running and road running?
Trail running and road running are two forms of running that have key differences, including the terrain on which they are practiced, the equipment required and recommended, the technique, and the runner’s experience.
As mentioned in the previous section, trail running takes place on natural trails, in forests, mountains, etc., which stand out for being irregular terrain that can vary in many ways. We may encounter rocks, slopes, mud, and narrow trails.
On the other hand, road running takes place on surfaces that are paved, from roads and running lanes to even athletics tracks. In this discipline, the most common footwear is usually lightweight shoes with good cushioning. In addition, it is not necessary to use poles. In trail running, the most common choice is to use trail-specific shoes. They usually have soles with greater grip to avoid slippery terrain, and their soles are generally more robust.
What are the benefits of trail running?
Improving balance and stability:
The variety of terrain we may encounter in trail running will help us improve coordination and balance, as it forces the runner to constantly adapt to different surfaces, obstacles, and directions. As a result, this type of running will help us develop the muscles responsible for stabilizing the joints.
Improving strength:
We will activate and use all the muscle groups in the body to tackle every climb, descent, and obstacle. For example, in order to maintain balance on irregular terrain, we will use our core, providing stability and improving posture. On the other hand, steep climbs and irregular terrain require more work from the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calves.
Connection with nature:
Practicing trail running gives us the opportunity to enjoy natural landscapes, which can generate a feeling of tranquility and peace, helping us disconnect, reduce stress, and even improve our mental health.

What equipment do I need to start practicing trail running?
Trail running footwear/shoes:
It is essential to choose suitable shoes for this sporting activity. Shoes designed for trail running provide optimal grip, traction, and stability on different types of terrain. Their soles are characterized by being thick, as they must not only cushion our steps but also protect us from elements such as rocks. Some shoes are also waterproof.
Hydration pack:
A hydration pack is essential for any trail runner, as it allows you to carry water and other liquids that will help you stay hydrated. You can also store food in it. There are packs of different sizes and capacities, so choose the one that best suits your needs.
Trekking poles:
Trekking poles are a tool that helps us gain additional points of support. Their use is recommended on slippery, rocky, or very uneven terrain. They will help us both uphill and downhill, providing extra support.
