What is protein?
Protein is one of the 3 macronutrients, whose main objective is to promote the repair and maintenance of muscle tissue, muscle mass gain, and recovery.
Each gram of protein provides 4 calories. Each person has specific protein requirements throughout the day, depending on their needs, lifestyle, and physical activity.
Proteins are made up of amino acids: there are 20 types in total. They are divided into two types depending on whether or not they can be synthesized by the body: essential and non-essential amino acids. A protein is considered to have high biological value when it contains all the essential amino acids.
What is isolate protein?
Isolate protein is a source of this macronutrient, characterized by a purity of around 90%. Its fat and carbohydrate content is practically non-existent.
It can be obtained through two types of processes:
- Cross-flow microfiltration
- Ion exchange.

Concentrate:
Whey concentrate is obtained through mild microfiltration processes. It contains a higher amount of carbohydrates and fats compared to isolate or hydrolyzed protein.
It is a source of high biological value. The protein percentage can range from 30% to 80%. It is quickly absorbed. It contains lactose. This type of protein is often found combined with digestive enzyme supplements, with the aim of minimizing any possible stomach discomfort that may occur.
Its main advantage is that it is the most economical option.
Isolate:
The type of protein we have discussed in depth throughout this post. In summary, it is characterized by having greater purity than the previous one and being suitable for people who are lactose intolerant. Faster absorption than whey concentrate.
The most common process for obtaining it is Cross-Flow Microfiltration. It can also be obtained through ion exchange.
Hydrolyzed:
It is the purest of the 3 types of protein. Its bioavailability is very high, and it is the protein that is digested and assimilated most quickly.
It is obtained through a process called hydrolysis, in which the long chains that make up proteins are broken down. It contains no fats or carbohydrates.
It is the least economical alternative, but offers the highest quality and purity.
Is it suitable for people who are lactose intolerant?
Yes, isolate protein is suitable for people who are lactose intolerant. It contains no lactose, or, if it does, the amounts are almost negligible. It is eliminated during the production process.
