Creatine Monohydrate or Kre-Alkalyn? Science or Marketing

Creatine is, without a doubt, one of the most researched and widely used supplements in the world of sports performance. Among its many forms, creatine monohydrate has remained the “gold standard” for decades. However, with the rise of marketing in the supplement industry, alternatives such as Kre-Alkalyn have emerged—a “alkalized” version of creatine that promises better absorption, greater stability, and fewer side effects. But is this true?

Creatine Monohydrate: the undisputed queen

Creatine monohydrate (CrM) has been the subject of hundreds of scientific studies supporting its efficacy and safety. It has consistently been shown to increase creatine levels in the muscle by between 20% and 40%, improving performance in high-intensity exercise and promoting gains in strength and muscle mass.

In addition, CrM has bioavailability close to 100% when consumed orally. In other words, practically everything we ingest is absorbed and used. Even from a digestive standpoint, creatine monohydrate is very stable, especially when consumed in powder form and in neutral or mildly acidic pH solutions (such as orange juice), provided it is consumed shortly after mixing.

Kre-Alkalyn: reality or marketing?

Kre-Alkalyn is a form of creatine with a higher (alkaline) pH, theoretically designed to better withstand stomach acidity and prevent its conversion into creatinine, an inactive by-product. In theory, this should improve absorption and reduce side effects such as bloating or digestive discomfort (which have occasionally been attributed to creatine monohydrate).

Another major benefit attributed to this new form of creatine is that it supposedly does not cause the “water retention” produced by creatine monohydrate. This is a “poorly substantiated” claim, and it has actually been established that most of this water retention occurs intracellularly, meaning that far from being problematic, it is beneficial both aesthetically and in terms of gaining lean mass (the feeling of muscle fullness).

However, independent scientific evidence is practically nonexistent. According to a review published by Kreider et al. in the journal Nutrients (2022), there are no peer-reviewed studies demonstrating that Kre-Alkalyn is more effective than creatine monohydrate for increasing muscle creatine or improving physical performance.

In fact, the study’s authors point out that many of these new forms of creatine have not been shown to have better bioavailability, efficacy, or safety, and that the claims made by brands often lack rigorous scientific support. In other words, it is usually a supplement that does not sell, and they want you to take it at all costs.

Most of the side effects attributed to creatine, such as water retention or digestive discomfort, are anecdotal and are not well documented in the scientific literature. In controlled studies, creatine monohydrate has demonstrated an excellent safety profile, even with prolonged use and in various populations (young people, older adults, women, etc.).

Which one should you choose?

The short answer: creatine monohydrate.

Not only is it the most effective and affordable form, but it is also the only one strongly supported by science and international organizations. While Kre-Alkalyn has not been shown to be dangerous, it has not been shown to be better either. Therefore, paying more for a supplement that provides no additional benefits does not seem like the smartest choice.

In summary:

If you are looking for performance, strength, and proven results: choose creatine monohydrate.
If a brand promises that its formula is “better” without showing solid evidence to support it… be wary.
In sports nutrition, more marketing does not mean better results.
