What is glutamine and its uses

What is glutamine?

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in plasma and muscle; it is a non-essential amino acid, which means that our body produces it naturally. However, consuming it as a dietary supplement can provide several benefits. During prolonged (marathons, triathlons, etc.) and high-intensity efforts, blood glutamine levels increase considerably, only to subsequently decline during recovery. Glutamine has four very interesting functions from a sports perspective:

  • It is the only and main ammonia transporter from the muscle to the liver, where it is converted into urea, which is not harmful to the liver, so maintaining proper levels helps this “detoxification” process.
  • The proper functioning of the immune system depends, among other things, on having adequate plasma glutamine concentrations.
  • When muscle glycogen stores decrease, glutamine can be used as an energy substrate for ATP resynthesis.
  • Most circulating glutamine is used in the small intestine, reducing intestinal permeability.

Life Pro Glutamine 500g LIFE PRO GLUTAMINE 500G

Uses of glutamine

  • It helps with recovery and muscle mass gain after a training session.
  • It helps strengthen the immune system, protecting against diseases and infections.
  • It is the precursor of glutathione, one of the body’s most powerful antioxidants.
  • It helps the wound-healing process and the injury recovery process.
  • It benefits nutrient absorption and helps maintain intestinal health.
  • It helps keep glycogen stores replenished.

Glutamine-rich products

In addition to having several supplements that contain glutamine, we can find it in some products, especially those containing protein. Some of these products are the following:

  • The protein in fish meat is a good source of glutamine, and it also contains a low proportion of fat.
  • All products derived from animals are rich in amino acids.
  • Lean and red meats contain a large amount of amino acids.

How is it taken?

If glutamine is taken as a supplement, the recommended intake is 5–10 grams per dose, between one and two doses per day. If you follow a balanced diet containing protein, carbohydrates, and fats, its consumption is not necessary.
