What are digestive enzymes?
Digestive enzymes are found in our bodies, and their main function is to break down the different foods we eat every day. Without enzymes, these foods could not be absorbed or used for the different and numerous functions for which they are required.
A large number of the digestive enzymes that exist are secreted throughout the digestive tract, mainly in the pancreas, which is the largest producer of enzymes in our body. Other places where the different types are produced include the mouth, through the salivary glands, the liver, and even the gallbladder.
Enzymes are classified within the group of hydrolases. When they break down food, the process is called hydrolysis.
Although we all have digestive enzymes in our digestive system, some individuals may have reduced or no production of one or more enzymes, for example, in the case of people who are intolerant to lactose. Their bodies are unable to produce a sufficient amount of the enzyme called lactase, which is responsible for breaking down lactose.
When this intolerance occurs, which is one of the most common, the body begins to produce uncontrolled chemical reactions because it cannot digest it, and as a consequence, the corresponding symptoms occur, such as gas, stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea, etc.
What is Digezyme?
Digezyme is a supplement made from a patented combination that includes all the digestive enzymes necessary to optimally support the digestion of nutrients.
Digezyme can be taken as an isolated supplement along with our meals or, in some cases, it may already be included in the selected protein supplement.
Supplementation with digestive enzymes will not only help improve digestion, but also prevent side effects such as heartburn, bloating, gas, etc., caused by enzyme deficiency or intolerance.
Types of digestive enzymes
- Amylase: also called sucrase or ptyalin. It is mainly secreted in the salivary glands and pancreas. It is responsible for digesting carbohydrates. There are two types of amylases: alpha-amylase and beta-amylase.
- Lipases: They are secreted in the pancreas and liver, and are activated when combined with bile salts. Their function is to digest fats or lipids.
- Proteases: they are produced by the pancreas, stomach, and small intestine. As their name indicates, they are responsible for breaking down proteins into amino acids.
- Phytase: it is used to break down different grains, legumes, seeds, and corn.
- Lactase: it is secreted in the cells of the intestine. It is responsible for breaking down lactose, a sugar found in dairy products. Its absence or deficiency is one of the most common, thus causing lactose intolerance.
- Cellulase: it is responsible for breaking down cellulose or plant fibers.
There are more types of digestive enzymes, but those mentioned are the most relevant and commonly found in enzyme complexes.
Who are digestive enzyme supplements recommended for?
Supplements made from digestive enzymes are recommended for all those people who suffer from an enzyme deficiency. When our body does not produce enough enzymes, a series of problems associated with the consumption of certain foods or supplements may arise, which an enzyme complex can resolve.
It is important that nutrient absorption can occur correctly and that nutrients can be utilized in order to maintain good health and prevent possible nutrient deficiencies.
They are also a good option for people who want to facilitate the digestive process and who suffer from heartburn, as they may reduce their symptoms.
